Questions, answered
What is a good grade in France?
Anything from 12 out of 20 is good, 14 is very good, and 16 or more is exceptional. French teachers rarely give 18 to 20, so a 14 is closer to an American A than to a C.
What is the passing grade in France?
Ten out of 20. It is called la moyenne, the average, and it is the pass mark for most exams including the baccalauréat.
What do assez bien, bien and très bien mean?
They are the honours given with the baccalauréat: assez bien from 12, bien from 14 and très bien from 16 out of 20.
