After we posted photos of ourselves as teenagers — Paris on his side, Massachusetts on mine — the comments asked a fair question: would we even have met? The honest answer is that we grew up on different operating systems. Same decade, same music, completely different machines. Here is the field guide, assembled by a couple who lived one adolescence each and have been comparing notes ever since.

Why do French teenagers go out so much younger?

Because the whole system points outdoors. Drinking is legal at 18 in France — and café culture starts even earlier, with teenagers claiming terrace tables over a single Coke for entire afternoons. So the French first-going-out years happen in public: bars, cafés, someone's tiny apartment before the bars. By seventeen he was ordering with the boredom of a regular. My American seventeen involved a basement, a rumor of a party, and someone's older brother. When I explained the concept of a fake ID, he needed a moment. «You commit a small crime,» he said slowly, «to do what I did on a Tuesday.» Yes. That is exactly the system.

Why don't French teenagers drive?

In Paris, a car isn't freedom — it's a burden with insurance. When he was a teenager the license waited until 18 (since 2024 it can be passed at 17). It still costs a small fortune in mandatory lessons, and buys you the privilege of circling for parking in a city where the metro arrives every three minutes. So Parisian teenagers simply… go. Everywhere. At fifteen he had the run of an entire capital on a transit card. Meanwhile in Massachusetts, my sixteenth birthday license was the single greatest liberation of my life, because without a Honda, suburban America is a series of unreachable islands. Two teenagers, two freedoms: his was a metro map, mine was a parking lot. He has since written about American driving. The tone is diplomatic. Mostly.

What do French teens have instead of prom?

Nothing — and they are not missing it, because you cannot miss what no one ever proposed. No prom, no homecoming, no promposals, no limo economics. French teenage social life runs on soirées, cafés, and the great annual migration to the coast in August, where the loafers-and-pull uniform gets its summer deployment. What France has instead of prom is le bac — the terrifying national exam the entire adolescence quietly points toward. When I showed him my prom photos, he studied them like anthropology. «You rented a car with a ceiling window,» he said, «to celebrate not taking an exam.» I have never felt more American.

So — would we have dated as teenagers? The evidence says the machinery would have failed us: he was on a terrace I couldn't legally join, unreachable by any road I could drive. But the archive photos suggest otherwise, and the comments were unanimous. Some things route around operating systems. He'd have found the one café in Massachusetts, or I'd have found the one Honda in Paris — and either way, we found New York, the city built precisely for two teenagers who grew up and split the difference.
