What makes a French pharmacy different from a drugstore?
The pharmacist. You are expected to describe a problem and be handed one answer, rather than to browse forty options and pick. That single fact shapes the whole shop — a narrow range, chosen by someone qualified, is the product.
It is also why there is no French CVS. A French pharmacy has to belong to pharmacists, so no supermarket or investor can open a chain of them.
And the pharmacist does more than sell. Depending on the pharmacy, he or she can vaccinate you against the flu, renew a prescription for a long-term condition, test you for strep throat and, since June 2024, give you the antibiotic if the test is positive. In autumn, people bring in the mushrooms they picked to ask whether they are safe to eat. It is a real service, and nobody thinks it is strange.
What do French people buy there?

Several of the best-known French skincare names grew up around spa towns, and France still treats a spa stay as medicine: a doctor can prescribe a cure thermale of 18 days, with dermatology among the twelve conditions it covers, and the national health insurance pays 65% of the treatment.
The honest part: the research on the sprays is thin, and most of it has been paid for by the brands that sell them. There are encouraging lab results on calming irritation, and little proof that a spray on your face does more than any gentle water would. Buy it because it feels good after the sun or a long flight. That is a perfectly good reason. It is not a treatment.
How to shop a French pharmacy
- Say bonjour first. Before you ask for anything. It changes the whole conversation.
- Describe the problem, not the product. “My skin is tight and red after the sun” gets you a better answer than a product name from a video.
- Know the two zones. Skincare and baby care are on open shelves. Medicine, including painkillers, is behind the counter, and you ask for it.
- In Paris, compare prices. Medicines that the national health insurance pays for cost the same everywhere; everything else is priced by the shop. The big discount pharmacies are often cheaper and always busier, so go on a weekday morning.
- Visiting from outside the EU? Spend more than €100.01 in one shop on one day and you can ask for the tax refund form. Bring your passport.
Are French pharmacies open on Sunday?
Most are not. There is always a pharmacie de garde, the duty pharmacy that takes its turn at night, on Sundays and on holidays. Every pharmacy door shows the nearest one. You can also look it up on 3237.fr or call 3237, which costs €0.35 a minute. For an emergency, the number is 15.

What do the viral lists get wrong?
